Carpet and Rug Care Tips & Information
Between Professional Cleanings
- Vacuum your carpets regularly.
- While vacuuming, go with the pile of your carpet to remove soil near surface, go against the grain to remove more embedded particles.
- Indoor and outdoor mats at every entrance help reduce the amount of dirt tracked in. Be sure to clean your doormats often!
- Treat spots and spills when they happen! The longer a substance stays on your carpet the more it can penetrate into the fibers and padding.
- Move your furniture occasionally to prevent the carpet from wearing or soiling unevenly in areas that get more traffic.
When Accidents Happen
- Remove any solid materials, like pieces of food, immediately.
- Place a clean cloth over the area to absorb as much liquid as possible.
- Spray spot remover or carpet cleanser directly on the area until it is wet.
- Let the spot remover or cleanser stand for three to five minutes so it can absorb into the affected fibers.
- Using a clean cloth, start at the edges of the affected area and wiping toward the center to lift the spot. You may need to repeat this process.
- Once the area is clean, blot it again with another clean cloth to absorb any remaining moisture.
Vacuum Cleaners
Queens Carpet Cleaning recommends using a good vacuum cleaner; the less expensive models tend to pick up only surface dirt, and are not powerful enough to get the deep down dirt.
Colorfastness
Make sure to test your carpet for colorfastness in an inconspicuous area before using spot removers or carpet cleansers on your carpet.
Area Rugs
Vacuum the underside of area rugs to remove any loose dirt that may filter through the rug fibers.
Professional Cleaning
Regular vacuuming is an effective way to remove most of the soil, sand, and dust that gets tracked onto on your carpets, professional cleaning about once every one to two years is also needed to remove oily, sticky substances, including cooking and pet odors that can and do accumulate in your carpet. These oily substances actually attract dirt and can break down your carpet fibers.
